we didn't hear about president obama saying you didn't build it or something like that. this was a more elevated discussion. we don't see a lot of things on ads tonight. >> right. i think that is good for the american people because it's a substantive discussion about issues and i thought that again, that governor romney came across with great command and energy. and that i'm certain next time he'll be better prepared. and there is a discussion about what's happening in latest attack ad. it's about the issues and i thought that it was for that reason a good debate. that was very impressed by and pleased with the governor's performance tonight. i think it gave him an opportunity he hasn't had before with people who are undecided. they had to have walked away tonight impressed by what they heard and saw. >> greta: i thought one of the questions governor romney handled well was the bipartisan question. we had a discussion about the fact there is no budget. we can't get a budget here because senator harry reid doesn't want that to happen. that is where there is a lot of tie

but from obama, you saw those quips he was tossing out. the stuff that you wish you had said, all the witty remarks and rebuttals that you never said at the dinner, but you remember on the way out. so he had all of these chances last night, which again shows he doesn't have a good game when it comes to being quick and effective on his feet, he's trying to make up for it. but what's going to happen in the second debate, it's going to be a town hall. that's different dynamic, how you interact with the audience. that's where, for example, bush did badly. bush won and clinton did really well. so that's going to be a challenge. romney is really good one on one. it will be different in a town hall for him. >> bret: we have the wit of the staircase sometimes here on the panel. when we leave the panel, man, why didn't i say that. >> i have the wit of the car every night. [ laughter ] >> bret: speaking of the biden-ryan set-up as we got ready to head to kentucky, kirsten, you listen to that sound bite and you heard charles say, oh, it's just biden.

big changes in the presidential race this week. the romney campaign was reenergized by the governor's strong performance in the first debate. but president obama got a big boost with a new jobs report that showed a sharp drop in the unemployment rate. we are going to have our own debate today between democratic governor martin o'malley of maryland and republican senator kelly ayotte of new hampshire. welcome to "fox news sunday." >> thanks for having us. >> great to be with you, chris. >> chris: start with the jobs numbers that came out friday. unemployment rate dropped to the lowest since president obama took office. the government said 114,000 jobs answered. in a us whohold survey, 873,000 more americans reported having jobs. senator ayotte, isn't the economy getting better? >> i think what is disappointing about the report is that the downtick we saw in unemployment is because of part-time work for economic reasons so people who want full-time jobs taking lower pay. you can't support a family on part-time work. and, of course, w

in ohio last week, we had cbs/"new york times" poll saying ten points for obama. and a columbus dispatch poll saying nine points. frank newport the head of the gallup organization had a blog posting that was revealing. he said you have to subject the state polls to the judgment of experience. he said for example, take ohio. the president won there by less than five points last time around. this time around, the poll that said he is winning by ten, does it make sense he would do twice as well, the margin is twice as big this time around than it was in 2008 when everybody is pointing to closer election than in 2008. of course not. it doesn't make sense. take this with the nevada and ohio shifts because of outlier polls. p.p.p. interestingly enough had a poll that was the outlier in nevada, plus nine for obama. then two polls in ohio. as a result they move it across the line from tossup to lean obama. i would say this, though. step back just a little bit and look at the arch since april. president obama has gone from 220 solid states, electoral college votes to 196 t
